Group of companies have recreated part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in VR

To share one of the richest collection of art, Intel, Framestore, VALIS, 8i and xRez decided to reproduce the second floor of the Museum’s East Wing.

Each company was responsible for a certain part of the work. LIDAR, a program of Intel, scanned the place. Afterwards Greg Downing, a specialist at xRez Studio, made 3D models by capturing everything using a photogrammetry technique. It took thousands of photographs “to reconstruct all the surfaces inside the museum” said Downing. The 8i Team took surround shots and Framestore put everything together and created a Unity project. The Studio’s lead creative director and producer Peter Martin managed the process.

By appearing in the virtual version of the museum, users can teleport to three places: a bronze sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the Adams Memorial; an original oil painting of the Aurora Borealis by Frederic Edwin Church and a video installation Face in the Crowd.

This project was realized for CES 2017 visitors. It has not been posted for free access yet, but you can watch the reporting video.
